Improving the World
This morning I accidentally smiled and waved at a complete stranger.
I’d been smiling to myself as I thought of a message I’d just gotten from a long-distance friend. When a car drove by, I reflexively smiled and waved as if it had been my friend! I felt a little embarrassed, even though the guy waved back (probably wondering who I was), but then I asked myself: What would the world be like if we all treated strangers as friends?
You’d need to be wise about it, of course, and practice good boundaries. But how much more kindness, connection, and joy would we all experience if, instead approaching people with “shields up,” we honored them as fellow human beings right from the start?
They say changing the world is a do-it-yourself project.
